Samsung to discontinue LCD production in June
Samsung has reportedly decided to shut down its LCD business in June, six months earlier than expected.
Originally, the company had planned on closing it at the end of 2020, but the pandemic saw a surge in demand for LCD screens.
The Korea Times reported that consumer interest in LCDs has faltered while they are more drawn toward display technologies such as Quantum Dot and OLED.
Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), a US market research firm, reported that LCD panel price index has fallen drastically since late 2021 and is down 60% year on year.
Samsung Display products were purchased by Samsung Electronics, which has recently partnered with overseas LCD suppliers from China and Taiwan. Moreover, smartphones have also shifted from LCD displays to OLEDs in recent years.
