Summer must-haves: Why you should ditch your full-coverage foundation for a moisturising tint
With the inevitable dawn of blistering summer days and muggy humidity, we’re slowly having to ditch layers of full coverage to pave way for breathable, lightweight alternatives that aren’t just time-saving but also embrace our skin’s natural texture. Tints are all the rage this summer, offering flawless sheer coverage, paired with skin-nourishing ingredients.
The near translucent sorcery of a good tint can be found in products for all skin types ranging from drugstore must-haves to high-end cult classics. Truth be told, a lot of renowned makeup artists are solely working with a CC (Colour Correcting) cream, BB (Beauty Balm or Blemish Balm) cream and moisturiser with sunscreen formula – all of which are readily available online and in stores.
The barely-there consistency of a tinted moisturiser offers the perfect amount of dewy glow which meets essential coverage all while highlighting your skin’s natural beauty. And with the rising temperature, we really need lightweight makeup!
Regardless of your age and irrespective of your skin type, moisturising your skin with all-natural nutrients is one of many essential components of a makeup look that sets. Whether you are a maquillage newbie or have mastered the art of serving looks, here is the holy grail of this summer’s beauty must-have according to industry experts and celebrity makeup artists.
These five products are a celebrity MUA’s dream and are a go-to summer essential for your makeup arsenal. The best part is, that these tinted products are fuss-free and allow for quick application without tools such as a makeup sponge or brush, you can simply use your fingers.
Renowned celebrity, fashion editorial and television makeup artist Neil Scibelli, who is known for his dewy and ethereal looks for fashion icons such as Molly Sims, Czech beauty Petra Nemcova and actor Michelle Williams, is a self-proclaimed fan of tinted moisturisers.
His go-to favourite is the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser Natural Skin Perfector SPF 30 which retails at approximately $48 (Rs 9,645). The product consists of a hydrating formula and is known for its use of natural ingredients such as macadamia and kukoi oil making it the perfect addition to your makeup routine. The best part is it is compatible with all skin types offering fuss-free coverage.
Other MUAs who endorse the Mercier brand include Los Angeles-based makeup artist Jamie Greenberg who, like Scibelli, trusts in Laura Mercier. Greenberg’s go to favourite is the oil-free tinted moisturiser with its matte finish and oil absorbency. Expect to appear radiant and shine-free for hours as it is formulated primarily for oily skin and protects and nourishes the skin on the go.
Nydia Figueroa is the iconic artist responsible for some of the world’s most glamorous events such as New York Fashion Week and the Miss Universe Organisation. Mentored by the one and only makeup guru, Eve Pearl, who happens to be a 5-time Emmy award-winning makeup artist, Figueroa, as her mentor before her, is one of the best and most sought after MUAs. Her go-to option is the pocket-friendly drugstore must-have from Cerave, offering sun protection with its Tinted SPF 30 sunscreen and contains ingredients that protect against redness and inflammation. This gem retails at $12 (a cool Rs 2500).
Another Figueroa favourite comes from the much-loved and versatile Tarte Cosmetics. While Tarte is known for their mineral infused palettes and lasting finish products, the go-to for Tarte is their Maracuja Hydrating Tinted Moisturiser, offering a vitamin C rich formula, that is ideal for dry skin and comes with the nourishing maracuja oil for a well-blended look that promises to not leave your skin drier and flaky looking.
Next up, is one of the top-selling brands by artist Charlotte Tilbury who needs no introduction; the makeup maestro turned beauty entrepreneur has been taking the makeup industry by storm with her highly sought-after range of makeup must-haves and her international success. Tilbury has made a global name for herself, with retail stores in all major cities.
A respected industry expert, Tilbury and her company were one of the few brands to produce a tinted moisturiser that served as gender-neutral. The Charlotte Tilbury Unisex Healthy Glow Hydrating Tinted Moisturizer is ideal for that summer sun-kissed glow without skin damage from sun exposure. While the verdict on Tilbury’s moisturizer is mixed reviews, the product will set you back an approximate $42 (Rs 8,500).
Makeup artist Danielle (Kimiko) Vincent who owns the Japanese beauty brand Kimiko and has had her stunning looks featured in no less than Vanity Fair, Vogue and Elle recommends the L'Oréal Paris True Match Nude Hyaluronic Tinted Serum Foundation. Ideal for anyone sensitive to the strong fragrance of beauty products this lightweight tinted serum makes for a winning combo when paired with an SPF cream. The serum foundation retails at $13 (2600 PKR approximately) and is available in stores and on Amazon.
Unlike most products that require you to test or match the product to your skin or cover up and hide natural signs of breakout, dark spots and aging, these products are fuss-free and encourage you to embrace your skin and proudly show off your face. Easy to shop for and available in a range of coverage from barely-there-sheer to a dewy radiance to full coverage, there is something for everyone.
