SGH Liaquatabad improves sanitatary conditions

Action follows The Express Tribune news about hospital waste dumped openly

KARACHI:

Medical waste in and around Sindh Government Hospital (SGH) Liaquatabad has been cleared, due to which the hygiene situation in the hospital has improved comparatively, it was observed during a visit to the facility.

SGH Liaquatabad Dr Muhammad Ayub Babar said there was a need of arrangement for the safe disposal of medical waste from the hospital on a regular basis.

The MS said, "even if there is an incinerator in the hospital, we cannot use it because the smoke coming out of the incinerator will harm the residents of the area."

Earlier, the Express Media Group ran a news that the medical waste from SGH Liaquatabad was not being disposed of regularly. The team Express during its earlier survey had observed first hand that the doctors and paramedics were throwing injections, syringes, drips, bloodstained cotton in a gallery attached to the hospital's corridor.

Due to the continuous presence of medical waste, piles of garbage accumulated for days and there was a nauseating stench which had become part of the locality. Moreover, hospital sanitation staff was simply hauling medical waste and dumping it outside on the main road. All these issues were pointed out by the Express Media Group.

However, the news had an effect, and medical waste in most parts of SGH Liaquatabad has been cleared, which has improved the sanitation situation in the hospital as compared to previous days.

Dr Muhammad Ayub Babar, MS, Sindh Government Hospital, said that efforts were being made to improve the sanitation system in the hospital, including medical facilities, as pointed out by Express-News.

Despite all the hospital authorities' problems, we are providing medical facilities to the patients, he added.
