‘Robber’ killed in police encounter

Police shot dead a suspect and arrested another during an encounter in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Two bike-riding suspects fled after looting citizens standing outside their house near Disco Bakery in Gulshane-Iqbal. Meanwhile, police arrived at the scene and tried to capture the suspects who had opened fire. The police retaliated, killing one suspect and arresting another.

According to Ashraf Jogi, SHO Gulshan Iqbal Police Station, Mirza Khalid Baig, and Muhammad Noman, were standing outside their homes near Disco Bakery at around 8.00 am on Sunday. Two robbers on motorcycles snatched cash and mobile phones from both the citizens at gunpoint. The suspects abandoned their bike and grabbed the bike from Muhammad Noman, and fled.

However, the Gulshan-eIqbal police van, which was on a routine patrol, reached the spot. The victims immediately informed the police about the incident and chased the suspects along with the police personnel. After reaching a short distance, the citizens immediately spotted the culprits. Police tried to capture the two robbers, but the shooters opened fire on them, but the policemen miraculously survived. In the retaliatory fire by the police, one suspect died while another was taken into custody.

The SHO further said that the police officers recovered two pistols, money, mobile phones, and a motorcycle from the possession of the deceased and the arrested suspects. The deceased was identified as Fazal Khattak, 25, earlier detained in Aziz Bhatti police station on robbery charges after getting released on bail.

The arrested accused has been identified as Muhammad Amjad. Police have registered three cases of robbery against him. In all three cases, the accused has been jailed and met the accused, who died, in jail. He started committing robberies after getting released on bail. In the preliminary investigation, the arrested accused revealed that he and his accomplice used to commit four to five incidents daily in and around Gulshan-e-Iqbal, distribute the looted money among themselves, and sell mobile phones in the market at low prices.
