PA Speaker cannot shirk his constitutional duty: AGP

AGP Ashtar Ausaf says assuming responsibility of acting governor is the constitutional responsibility of the speaker

The newly-appointed Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Ashtar Ausaf said on Wednesday that it was a constitutional responsibility of the Punjab Assembly speaker to assume the responsibility of acting governor, therefore, Pervaiz Elahi could not shirk away from constitutional responsibilities.

The AGP reached the Supreme Court to take his new responsibilities. Abdul Hameed Awan, in-charge of the AGP Office received Ausaf. On his first day in office, the AGP also held informal talks with reporters.

Responding to a question about the refusal of Elahi to become the acting governor, the AGP said that how could Speaker Pervez Elahi refuse to discharge his constitutional duties. “Assuming the responsibility of acting governor is the constitutional responsibility of the speaker,” he said.

When asked if he would appear in the apex court in the hearings of the reference for the interpretation of Article 63-A of the Constitution, the AGP replied that he would surely appear if he was called by the Supreme Court.
