Woman’s decision to live life on her own terms ends in tragedy

A woman’s decision to live her life on her own terms ended up in a bloody spectacle, claiming her life and the lives of two other women in Mananwala on Wednesday.

Shamim Bibi had secured divorce from Liaquat and then married a man of her choice, Ehsan.

She had been living happily with Ehsan and her in-laws for some time. However, tragedy struck, and her days of bliss came to a bloody end.   

On Wednesday, her ex-husband Liaquat, along with six accomplices carrying firearms, allegedly stormed into the house of her in-laws’s in Mananwala and opened indiscriminate fire, killing Shamim’s sisters-in-law, Amna and Shahida, on the spot and injuring Shamim and her father-in-law Aslam. 

The injured were rushed to a hospital where Shamim Bibi died of her injuries. She was said to be pregnant.

The condition of Shamim’s father-in-law was critical.

Bhakhi Police Station registered a case against four accused, including Liaquat, on the complaint of Shamim’s mother-in-law, Irshad Bibi.

In October last year, seven people, including four children, were killed after their house was set on fire allegedly by the relatives of a woman who had married a member of the family of her own will.

The woman and her four-month-old son were among the victims of the arson attack in the Pir Jahanian area. However, her husband escaped the attack because he was not preset in the house at the time.

Police officials said they had seized a can of petrol used in setting the house on fire, shifted the bodies to a hospital for postmortem and registered a case on the complaint of the woman’s husband, Meboob.

The complainant’s father-in-law and brother-in-law were nominated in the murder case. Mehboob alias Kala, a resident of Pir Jahanian in Muzaffargarh district, had married Fauzia Bibi about one-and-a-half years ago in the Mahira area of Rohilanwali. The woman’s father, Manzoor Hussain, and brothers, Nawaz and Sabir, were reportedly upset over the marriage.

They allegedly sprayed petrol on the house of Mehboob, set it on fire and fled.

Rescue 1122 staff dowsed the fire after an hour's efforts.

According to rescue workers, there were seven people in the house and all of them died after their entire bodies were burnt. The dead included four children and two women.
