Emma Chamberlain wears Maharaja of Patiala's diamond choker at the MET gala, irks fans
This year's MET Gala's biggest snafu was touted to be Kim Kardashian donning the iconic Marilyn Monroe dress. Kardashian received ample criticism for 'almost ruining the outfit'. However, as the reality TV star stole the limelight for damaging the historic ensemble, what many didn't notice was how Emma Chamberlain opted for a rare piece of jewellery to go with her Louis Vuitton figure-hugging dress at this year's MET.
One eagle-eyed tweep pointed out how the popular YouTuber was wearing Maharaja of Patiala’s diamond choker to Met Gala 2022. Chamberlain's decision to wear the antique piece did not seem to go down well with the general public for which she faced criticism.
Chamberlain, who is the ambassador of Cartier jewels, adorned the piece which complimented her outfit perfectly. The Maharaja had commissioned Cartier to make the heirloom piece with the De Beers diamond as the centrepiece and it was completed around 1928.
It was famously known as the Patiala Necklace. It went missing for a certain period of time before reappearing in London and being “re-bought” by Cartier. However, the allegations of the choker having been “stolen” at some point have not so far been substantiated.
Social media users slammed the artist for choosing the said jewellery item.
"While we are talking about Kim Kardashian wearing Marilyn Monroe’s dress can we talk please also talk about how Emma Chamberlain literally wore Maharaja Of Patiala’s Cartier Diamond Choker," a user penned.
Another added how the said piece has been 'stolen from India.' She penned, "Who was gonna tell me Emma Chamberlain wore a $30 million necklace from a Maharaja of India to the met gala. Astronomical privilege to wear something that is historically connected and stolen from India's history."
One more added, "So I just found out Emma Chamberlain wore the Maharaja of Patiala’s necklace at the MET gala… This is way worse than Kim wearing Marilyn Monroe’s dress." She added, "It has a deep and painful history attached to it. Very on-theme, nothing screams gilded glamour quite like expropriation."
Another user wrote, "I love Emma Chamberlain but what is this? Wearing a piece of Maharaja Yadavindra Singh’s diamond necklace set. We all blaming Kim but can we spill some light on this too?"
A tweep shared, "Everybody wanna talk about Kim wearing Marilyn’s dress but let’s talk about Emma Chamberlain, literally some YouTuber wearing the Maharaja of Patiala’s diamond choker which was stolen by the British."
One shared how the detail would not get much attention since it revolves around South Asians. "I’m afraid Emma Chamberlain wearing the Maharaja choker isn’t going to get nearly as much attention as Kim Kardashian wearing Marilyn Monroe’s dress simply because the stolen item belongs to South Asians," the tweet read.
The choker belonged to the Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh and was made in 1928 after the Maharaja decided to turn his De Beers diamond, the 7th largest in the world into an heirloom choker. The choker was commissioned to Cartier and the end result was called the Patiala Necklace, flaunting 2930 diamonds and Burmese rubies. The choker is believed to be one of the most expensive pieces of jewellery made in history, evaluated at a whopping $30 million today in its original form.
