Relatives attack doctors after girl dies in hospital
Relatives staged a protest after a young girl died at the emergency department of Holy Family Hospital during treatment.
Family members of the victim, identified as Isha Iman, 17, staged a protest and thrashed doctors and nurses before the police arrived and arrested two attackers and transferred them to the police station. The attacker were charged with assault, torture and vandalism.
Meanwhile, the Holy Family Hospital management has sent a letter to the Rawalpindi Medical University vice-chancellor for an investigation into the death after the family demanded the inquiry.
According to sources, the girl was rushed to Holy Family Hospital between the night of Tuesday and Wednesday night after her health deteriorated. According to family members, doctors and nurses delayed medical assistance, which led to the death. After the attack by the relatives of the victim, doctors and the paramedical staff closed down the emergency before the medical superintendent intervened and reopened it.
Holy Family Hospital additional MS Dr Akhtar said that the patient’s both kidneys were not functioning and she was taking dialysis treatment at the Holy Family Hospital. He said that she was also suffering from high blood pressure.
Dr Akhtar said that the victim was admitted to the hospital by her family members in a critical condition after her health deteriorated. He rebuffed the allegation that the patient died after she did not get prompt treatment.
He said that the vice-chancellor has been requested to form an investigation team to probe the death.
He said that responsibility will be fixed on the basis of the investigation.
Meanwhile, Young Doctors Association (YDA) Holy Family Hospital President Dr Shafi Niazi deplored the death of the patient and the attack on doctors and nurses. He demanded the deployment of trained security guards for the security of doctors.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Dr Shafi Niazi said that he has long been demanding that arrangements be made for the security of doctors and nursing staff working in emergency and OPD so that relatives of patients could be prevented from attacking doctors and the paramedical staff.
