Milk prices: CDGK seeks more time in Rs10 price rise petition

An application was filed with the Sindh High Court (SHC), challenging the increase in milk prices - Rs10 per litre.

KARACHI:

The hearing addressing a rise in milk prices was adjourned indefinitely as the city government sought more time for the umpteenth time.

An application was filed with the Sindh High Court (SHC), challenging the increase in milk prices - Rs10 per litre - by wholesalers and retailers in Karachi.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Musheer Alam and Justice Imam Bux Blaoch heard the constitutional petition filed by the United Human Rights Commission through its chairman, Rana Faiz-ul Hasan.

He told the judges that the City District Government Karachi has fixed the price of milk per litre at Rs60 but milk sellers in and around the Karachi division are charging Rs70 per litre.

About 500,000 litres are consumed every day which means Karachi’s residents are spending Rs5 million more on milk each day.

Hasan sought a contempt of court application against the city arguing that, despite being served several notices, the city has not filed any comments.

When the application came up for hearing on Friday, the city’s lawyer, Manzoor Ahmed advocate, asked for a few more days to file comments.

The bench allowed the request and put the hearing off until further notice.

The city government and milk sellers have been at odds for several years over the price of milk.
