Pakistanis will be able to watch 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' on Netflix next week

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial stars Ajay Devgn, Vijay Raaz, Seema Pahwa and Indira Tiwari in significant roles.

Gangubai goes digital! Good news for Pakistani fans as Sanjay Leela Bhansali's latest offering, Gangubai Kathiawadi, is all set to release on Netflix next week. The fans have been desperately waiting for Alia Bhatt's film to release on OTT platforms. After several delays, the streaming platform on Wednesday announced that the period drama will release on the streaming giant on April 26.

Taking to Twitter, Netflix India shared the date announcement of the film’s digital release on its official page. “Dekho, dekho chaand Netflix pe aaraha hai. (Look, the moon is arriving on Netflix). Gangubai Kathiawadi arrives on April 26th,” the tweet read.

Based on a chapter from Hussain Zaidi’s book, The Mafia Queens of Mumbai, Gangubai Kathiawadi shows the journey of a matriarch, who was forced into prostitution as a child. She rises in the ranks and goes on to become a fierce madam of the brothel and a political leader, championing the rights of sex workers and their children.

The film opened up to a  mammoth response The acclaimed period drama gained praises from fans and critics alike and became one of the biggest hits of the year, amassing nearly INR1.3 billion at the box office.

The Padmavaat director, known to explore untold traditional stories, has also joined hands with Netflix for his pre-Independence set project Heeramandi, which marks his digital debut. The upcoming series will depict accounts of courtesans and the hidden cultural reality of Lahore's red-light district, during pre-Independent India.
