AJK LA to elect new PM today

Winning candidate must secure at least 27 votes

MUZAFFARABAD:

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry has convened the session of state’s legislative assembly on Monday (today) to elect new leader of the house.

Legislative Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Anwarul Haq will preside over the session. The 53 members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) will cast their votes. The winning candidate must secure at least 27 votes.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has nominated Sardar Tanvir Ilyas as the party’s candidate for prime minister’s office while the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) have jointly fielded Chaudhry Yasin.

As per the ‘number game’, PTI has a clear majority with 32 MLAs while PPP has a total of 12 MLAs in the AJK Legislative Assembly. Some 7 MLAs belong to former ruling party the PML-N, while Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Party (JKPP) and the Muslim Conference (MC) have one member each.
