FAISALABAD:

Agriculture is the most important sector as food security is a growing concern due to the impact of climate change and rapid increase in population, emphasised Netherlands Ambassador Wouter Plomp.

Talking to the trainers of a project titled “Capacity building of small-scale potato growers in Punjab, Pakistan” at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) on Tuesday, the envoy highlighted that the Netherlands Enterprise Agency was supporting the project, which was helping in increasing the productivity for 950 small-scale potato growers in four districts of Punjab including Sahiwal, Okara, Kasur and Pakpattan.

He underlined that the agriculture sector had gained importance in order to feed the ever-growing world population that “may touch 10 billion by the end of this century”.

Pakistan had a great potential to promote the agriculture sector due to its massive fertile land, he said.

“The Netherlands is one-fifth of Punjab in terms of area,” he said, adding that still the country was among the top food exporters due to the use of latest agricultural tools, practices and research.

He underlined that education in the Netherlands was very affordable and Pakistani students should benefit from it.
