KARACHI:

A retired cop took a last stand at his home fighting out with a large contingent of police for hours in a standoff that ended in his death. Majeed Gul, retired official of a law enforcing agency, was accused of illegal display of arms in neighbourhood near Dawood Chowrangi.

However, when one of his neigbours, a policeman Nadeem Hakeem, went to talk him out of this practice, Majeed shot and injured him, SSP Malir Irfan Ali Bahadur told the media.

Subsequently, a case was registered with the Sharafi Goth police station and a contingent of police and Rangers arrived to arrest Majeed at 12:30am on Sunday. Instead of courting arrest, Majeed took the extreme step of challenging the law.

He opened fire on the policemen approaching his home. Police and Rangers returned fire, but Majeed had taken a position inside a room and kept on firing single shots of a 30 bore pistol keeping the cops at bay. Sharafi Goth police station SHO Adeel Ahmed Shah tried to break the door and enter the house, but Majeed sent him back with slugs in an ambulance.

Constables Hafeez Shah and Muhammad Yasir were also injured by Majeed. Upon receiving the incident report, SSP Malir Irfan Ali Bahadur reached the spot with a heavy contingent of police and Rangers. Police and Rangers once again asked him to surrender.

However, Majeed came out shooting indiscriminately. He received a volley of bullets and collapsed. Police rushed him to hospital but he succumbed to his injuries.
