Power tariff likely to increase by Rs4.99 per unit
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has filed a petition with the National Electric Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), seeking an increase of Rs4.99 per unit in the price of electricity.
According to Express News, NEPRA will hear the CPPA’s petition on March 31, and if it is accepted the price of electricity may be jacked up by Rs4.99 per unit.
The petition states in February, 31.70 percent of electricity was generated from coal, 6.71 percent from furnace oil, 11.36 percent from domestic gas, 15.16 percent from liquefied natural gas (LNG), while nuclear fuel generated 12.53 percent of electricity.
The petition added that reference fuel cost for February was fixed at Rs4.25 per unit.

It is worth mentioning here that on March 10, NEPRA had decided to increase the price of electricity by 5.94 paisa per unit over fuel adjustment, imposing an additional burden pf Rs58 billion on consumers.
The rapid increases in electricity tariffs have been a frequent point of criticism for the federal government, besides inflation, currency devaluation and increasing fuel prices.
Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan had told the public in his televised address that the government would not hike electricity prices till the next annual budget.
