QUETTA:

At least three female public servants were slightly injured when protesting government employees and police clashed in Quetta on Tuesday.

Members of the Balochistan Grand Employees Association (BGEA) were trying to enter and stage a sit-in in the Red Zone but baton-wielding policemen tried to push them back.

During shoving and pushing, three female government employees were slightly injured. “The Injured women employees now have been discharged from the hospital,” Muhammad Younas Kakar, the Spokesman for the BGEA told The Express Tribune.

Police also used tear gas and baton-charged the protestors in order to disperse them. The protesters were demanding end to disparity in their salaries. “Our salaries should be equal to other provinces", Kakar demanded, adding that despite repeated assurance, the Balochistan government failed to increase the salaries of its employees.

Members of the BGEA, a combination of 33 unions of Balochistan had also staged a 12-day sit-in in Quetta last year.

However, former Chief Minister Balochistan, Jam Kamal refused outright to meet the employees and accept their demands back then.

The use of tear gas and batons provoked the employees and they staged a sit-in outside the commissioner Quetta’s office.
