Haven’t earned it: Dolly Parton ‘respectfully’ bows out of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

American singer and songwriter Dolly Parton announced that she has respectfully bowed out of her nomination for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The Jolene hitmaker feels she hasn’t earned the right to be there as of yet.

Parton shared a heartfelt note explaining the reason behind her withdrawal from the nominations. Sharing a post on Instagram, she wrote, “Even though I’m extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right.” The Islands in the Stream crooner also expressed that she does not wish to rob anyone of the space by causing a split of votes. “I really do not want votes split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out.”

To assure she holds the nomination and her music in high regard, she went on to add, “I do hope the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will understand and will be willing to consider me again–if I’m ever worthy.”

A delight to many, Parton revealed that the nomination “inspired” her to “put out a hopefully great rock n’ roll album at some point in the future”. She also shared that a rock album has been on her wish list for a long time now. The musician also noted that her husband Carl Dean is a rock n’ roll fan, saying, “He always encouraged me to do one.”

Parton concluded her note with wishes for all the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees. “I wish all of the nominees, good luck and thank you again for the compliment. Rock on!”

This year marked Parton’s first nomination for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She was on the list alongside artists including Beck, Devo, Kate Bush, Eminem, Rage Against the Machine, Carly Simon and others.
