Pricey poultry blamed on bulk suppliers

Chicken meat selling for over Rs500 per kg

KARACHI:

Poultry farmers and wholesalers are taking advantage of the decline in beef sales and charging exorbitant prices for poultry. Despite the official price being Rs214, chicken meat is sold at Rs500 per kg in Karachi.

The city administration and the Sindh government remain indifferent, and poultry sellers sell chicken at more than double the official price. Due to the rapid spread of the disease in cattle, citizens avoid beef, which the poultry mafia is taking full advantage of the situation.

The official price of chicken is Rs214, while it is being sold at Rs500 per kg in the markets. Poultry sellers say that live poultry is coming from a poultry farm at Rs315 per kg, so it is impossible to sell at less than Rs500 per kg. Shopkeepers blame poultry farmers for the rise in poultry prices. Vendors of Nazimabad Round Market say that domestic consumption of chicken is almost non-existent.

Citizens are buying limited amount of chicken meat while commercial demand is also declining. According to vendors, poultry farmers are raising prices daily, and there is no one to stop them. As the price of chicken goes up, sales go down. On the other hand, the citizens say that not only chicken but almost all food items are being sold at arbitrary prices.
