Legal fraternity calls joint meeting on March 16
The legal fraternity has called a joint meeting of its constituent bodies on March 16 in the wake of the “growing political unrest” in the country. According to a statement issued on Friday, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Muhammad Ahsan Bhoon and Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) Vice Chairman Hafeezur Rehman Chaudhry have decided to convene a joint meeting of representative bodies of federal and provincial bar councils as well as the high court associations.
The legal fraternity will discuss the prevailing political situation and devise a strategy to protect and strengthen the constitutional and democratic system of the country during the meeting which will be held at the SCBA office in the federal capital.
Invitations have been sent to all bar councils and high court bar associations at the federal and provincial level. The office-bearers of the said bar councils and bar associations have also been requested to ensure their presence in the larger interest of the Constitution of Pakistan and the democratic process.
The call for the meeting comes a day after the SCBA announced a countrywide strike over the scuffle between Islamabad police and lawmakers. A former president of the association was attacked and arrested.
Pakistan is currently witnessing political tensions at the national level. In a bid to oust Prime Minister Imran Khan, the opposition has joined hands to execute a motion of no-confidence. The government, on the other hand, appears confident of sailing through this motion easily.
