SBP for including excluded segments in banking

Says everyone should enjoy fair, equal access to financial services

KARACHI:

The vision of full financial inclusion in the country cannot be achieved without bringing the excluded segments of society in the formal banking sector, said State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Reza Baqir.

Addressing an event titled “Moving towards Inclusive Pakistan”, he emphasised that persons with disabilities must enjoy fair and equal access to the financial sector services to make full use of their potential for an independent living.

“We are working with banks to improve financial independence of persons with disabilities by improving their access to banking services and providing them opportunities to contribute as bank employees besides creating financial awareness among them,” he said.

The SBP governor appreciated the efforts of NIBAF and PPAF for imparting financial literacy to the members of deaf community including students.

He reiterated his commitment to ensure financial inclusion for every citizen in the country.

Speaking on the occasion, First Lady Samina Arif Alvi stated that learning should not be confined to age or abilities.

She remarked that the financial education and training being provided to the deaf was a great cause, which would help develop their careers and add to the national economy.

She appreciated the commitment of teachers to provide education to the persons with disabilities.

She also lauded the efforts being made by the SBP in that regard and stressed the need for making the public aware of the State Bank’s initiatives to make Pakistan more financially inclusive and progressive.

According to her, the nation will be able to catch up with the fast-paced global developments through it.

Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) Chief Operating Officer Nadir Gul Barech affirmed the commitment of his organisation to an inclusive development agenda.

According to him, economic development could not be achieved unless Pakistan enabled persons with special needs to reach their full potential.

National Institute of Banking and Finance (NIBAF), a subsidiary of the SBP, and PPAF jointly organised the event.

Prominent members of the education sector, banking community, and business fraternity were also present.
