Bella Hadid asks why outrage over injustice in Ukraine does not extend to Muslim nations

‘The language we use to define oppression cannot favour one victim over another,’ wrote the model

Bella Hadid is known to speak up against injustice, with the supermodel being vocal about her support for Palestine and condemnation of Israeli atrocities. Never afraid of voicing her opinions on injustice against Muslims, Bella recently took to Instagram to question why wars in Muslim countries are not met with the same level of outrage as compared to the outrage displayed against the war in Ukraine, and why empathy extended to those suffering in the latter is not extended to Muslims caught in the crosshairs of conflict.

Captioning the post, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” Bella wrote in a note posted to her Instagram, “Question yourself, question how quietly you moved around other injustices, the footprint we leave here will be the clearest one we've left in a long time.”

Pointing out the biased reaction to the Ukraine war, Bella continued, “If this is your first time realising a war in some years, you're not of the world. War is forever, and the position we take during it is forever too.”

Encouraging people to speak up despite their discomfort, the model added how supporting Ukraine is easy as compared to supporting suffering Muslims. She explained, “The moment the American president is defending a liberation movement, there’s no risk in joining that defence. There’s little glory in joining a warmonger point at another warmonger.”

Emphasising how her message in no way means to undermine the situation in Ukraine, Bella asserted that the issue has become “as much about that nation as it is about injustice, and the way we’ve failed to uphold it elsewhere dictates this”. She added, “Our lack of tools here is a result of our neglect elsewhere.”

Bella wrote, “The language we use to define oppression cannot favour one victim over another.” She concluded the note by questioning her readers about their outrage over atrocities committed against Muslim nations. “How many Muslim nations aflame? Invasions by the west, merciless drone strikes, executions, internment camps in China? How much of Palestine, how little of Palestine left?"
