PESHAWAR:

Jamil, the police constable who was martyred while guarding a mosque in Peshawar's Kocha Risaldar suicide attack, had come on duty in the morning after spending the night in a hospital. Jamil’s wife had given birth to a daughter two days ago.

His name was written in the list of martyrs on Friday after he was shot while on duty at the imambargah’s entrance. The martyred officer, who was the eldest of the siblings, had gotten married a few years ago. Besides a new-born daughter and a wife, he left behind a one-and-a-half-year old son.

Khalil, the brother of Jamil, told The Express Tribune that his brother was very happy over the birth of his daughter.

“The whole village talked about how well-mannered he was … he was loved by his parents the most but maybe martyrdom was written in his destiny.”

Khalil said his brother was very fond of joining the police force. “Jamil was recruited in 2009 when the law and order situation was not good in Peshawar,” Khalid said, adding that he loved his uniform immensely.

Khalil said, “Our house was filled with happiness when this sudden incident shook everyone's heart … still our spirits are high and we are proud because my brother is a martyr.”

Jamil was stationed at Kocha Risaldar four times from 2016 to 2020.

Jamil's mobile phone was also found from the crime scene. According to his family members, the martyr spoke to his parents and family members and inquired after their well-being two hours before the blast.
“The martyred loved long mustaches. He had long mustaches even when he was recruited in the police.”

The Kocha Risaldar blast has been described as a major act of terrorism in Peshawar over the last two years.

According to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Moazzam Jah Ansari, police and law enforcement agencies have been attacked in recent months, but “we have also had great success in breaking terrorist networks”.

According to the report received by The Express Tribune, from January 1, 2021 to February 28, 2022, 55 police officers and personnel were martyred in terrorist incidents in K-P and the tribal areas. “Thirty-eight were targeted in K-P and 17 in tribal areas.”

Meanwhile, the Counter Terrorism Department carried out 2,525 joint intelligence-based operations in which 124 terrorists were killed, including Abu Bakr, the most wanted commander of ISIS, who was the head in K-P.

Commander Bakr was involved in targeted killing of 24 policemen.

According to the official report, 65 policemen were also injured in the incidents of terrorism. During these operations, 11 suicide jackets and 234 hand grenades were recovered.

According to senior officials of the K-P CTD, the international terrorist organisation ISIS seems to be involved in the killing of a priest in Peshawar, the assassination of Hakim Satnam Singh and most of the attacks on police personnel.

Regarding the Peshawar blast, the K-P IG police also said that there was no clear threat regarding the attack in Kocha Risaldar. They are also gathering information about the facilitator of the attack and who brought the suicide bomber to this place, for “which footage is being collected from all the cameras of the city”.
