KURIANWALA:

Another woman fell victim to honour killing in the district, taking the number of such incidents in the district in the last two months to five.

In this latest incident, the accused took his wife to an agriculture field where he allegedly slit her throat. Shabbir Ahmed, a resident of Chak No. 65 GB, Jaranwala Road, had recently had his daughter married to Muhammad Shahid.

Soon after the marriage, Shahid had developed doubts “about the character of his wife”.

He allegedly decided to get rid of her. He waited for the right time and place to carry out his plan.

When the victim went to the fields to get some Sagh (mustard greens), Shahid found his opportunity.

He followed her, slit her throat with a knife, dumped her body in the fields and escaped. The body of the victim remained lying in the fields for many hours.

Meanwhile, her family started worrying when she failed to return from the fields. They began a search for her and found her body in the fields. The enraged family members blocked the Main Jaranwala Road in protest.

Meanwhile, police arrived and negotiated with the relatives of the deceased, assuring them of immediate arrest of her husband. Upon the assurance by the police, the family members and other relations of the deceased dispersed.

Within a short span of time, police managed to arrest the accused. As soon as the Punjab Chief Minister, Usman Buzdar, learnt about the tragic incident, he directed the Chairperson of the Punjab Women Protection Authority, Fatima Chadhar, to seek a report from the CPO on the matter and provide justice to the bereaved family.

SHO Yousuf Shehzad took timely action and arrested the husband of the victim. Police also claimed to have recovered the knife used in the murder.

A case was registered on the statement of Sajid Mahmood, brother of the deceased.

As mentioned earlier, five women have been killed allegedly by their husbands in the name of honor in the last two months in the district.

Three of those incidents took place in the rural areas of the district and two in the urban areas.

There have been several incidents of violence against women across the province last year as well.

In March 2021, a woman was allegedly strangled by her husband and brother in the name of honour in Khurrianwala.
