After Britney Spears, Amanda Bynes hopes to end nine-year-long conservatorship

Actor has been in care after her 2013 publicised spiral of erratic behaviour, multiple arrests, and substance abuse

After nine long years, American actor Amanda Bynes has filed to terminate her conservatorship according to her lawyer, reported Page Six. David A Esquibias, the lawyer of the 35-year-old actor, shares that Bynes no longer deems court-mandated protection necessary.

In a statement to People, Esquibias shared, “Amanda wishes to terminate her conservatorship. She believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary."

Last year in September, Bynes’ health status reports were filed and approved by a California court. The next update is due in January 2023. Although the reports say otherwise, Esquibias elucidated that her conservatorship was “not extended” till 2023. He further explained, “It is open on a day-to-day basis. A status report regarding her health and welfare was recently filed and approved by the court. By law, the next status report is due in two years. Her conservatorship will terminate when it is no longer convenient for Amanda."

According to her lawyer, the Easy A actor is “doing great.” Last April, Esquibias said, “She lives by the beach, attends school and is enjoying meditation and Soul Cycle classes,” referring to her commitment to getting better. Back in October 2020, Esquibias reported that Bynes’ was working on her degree at California's Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising after graduating with her associate's degree in 2019, as per People. “Amanda is very entrepreneurial. She is investigating fragrances. She is now considering perfume in addition to a clothing line. But, don't get too excited. She is still a student at FIDM earning her degree."

Bynes was first placed under the conservatorship of Lynn, her mother, in August 2013 after she allegedly set fire to a driveway. Her erratic behaviour was highly publicised following multiple arrests amid a struggle with substance abuse.

However, reports of her getting better have been surfacing every now and then. She is currently engaged to Paul Michael, a man she met at her former sober living home in late 2019. The Nickelodeon child star is known for films like She's the Man, Hairspray and What a Girl Wants. Her last big-screen role was in 2010's Easy A as Marianne.
