Expatriate alumnus funds $5m KEMU block

Governor praises charitable work by overseas Pakistanis

Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar on Saturday inaugurated the Maqbool Ahmad Block of the King Edward Medical University (KEMU), which has been built with a donation from an overseas Pakistani.

Hailing from Toba Tek Singh, Dr Maqbool Ahmad graduated from the KEMU (then KEMC) and migrated to the United States in 1972. He set up a chain of clinics in Southern Illinois and Missori.

He is running many charities in the US, Africa and Pakistan. The block has been built through a $5 million donation and is named after Dr Ahmad and his wife Samina Ahmad. The governor said on the occasion that the overseas Pakistanis were always in the forefront of charitable works in the hour of need.

Later, Governor Sarwar presided over the 131st convocation of the Punjab University and gave away medals to graduates. As many as 327 PhD degrees were also awarded during the convocation. The governor also attended the International Conference on Rheumatology 2022, held under the auspices of Sheikh Zayed Postgraduate Medical Institute.
