Takes PTI MPs for a ride on Green Line Bus

KARACHI:

President Dr Arif Alvi on Monday inaugurated a two-day symposium to promote awareness about cancer disease here at Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Karachi Institute of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine (KIRAN) hospital as part of the awareness campaign in line with the World Cancer Day.

He also inaugurated the newly installed cancer diagnosis and treatment facilities including Linear Accelerator and PET/CT Scanner at Atomic Energy Cancer Hospital (AECH), Karachi, a facility attached with KIRAN.

At the symposium, more than 200 cancer specialists from across the country would present their research papers on head, neck and breast cancer.

President Alvi said that PAEC had been rendering commendable national service for decades through application of nuclear technology in the fields of nuclear power, agriculture and biotechnology. The most appreciable role played by the commission had been witnessed in health sector especially in diagnosis and treatment of cancer through its AECHs.

He said PAEC's efforts were indeed remarkable - either it were in the field of indigenously producing radio isotopes or indigenously running Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) after vendor support was discontinued for the plant in 1970s.

Earlier, PAEC Chairman, Muhammad Naeem briefed the President and Begum Samina Arif Alvi about the commission's initiatives and projects meant for socio-economic uplift of the nation- major contribution was in defence, energy and health sectors.

President Alvi took a ride along with passengers on a Green Line bus from Numaish Chowrangi to Guru Mandir here on Monday and expressed satisfaction over the services of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).

Talking to the media during his maiden travel on the bus, he said the BRT Green Line Bus project had been launched to facilitate the people of the megacity of Karachi, who would now enjoy a comfortable journey during their inter-city movement.

Earlier on his arrival at the Numaish Bus Station, Dr Alvi purchased his ticket for travelling on the Green Line bus. Dr Alvi talked to the female passengers about the BRT Green Line Bus project, who expressed their satisfaction over the service. They thanked the President for the provision of comfortable transport to them.

Minister for Maritime Affairs Syed Ali Haider Zaidi and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf members of the Sindh Assembly also accompanied the President.
