Tangy and sweet: Four a-peeling recipes using oranges

From trifles to marmalades, here's how you can savour the tangy delights before the season is over!

Oranges are inarguably the best part about winter. However, the sad part is that they’re only in season for approximately three months. While the seasonal cocktails, squashes and eating the pulpy oranges straight out of peels is an experience on its own, we have better ideas to savour the tangy delights in the best ways possible.

Compiled from Food Fusion, here are four ways you can preserve and enjoy oranges – some even after its season is over.

1. Orange Trifle

If you prefer fruity desserts over chocolate ones, this creamy trifle is the one for you. Three beautiful layers of orange and white not only look aesthetically appetising but also taste heavenly! Whisk eggs, milk, vanilla essence and vanilla flavoured custard powder well. Then slice a plain pound cake into small cubes and set them in a trifle tray and pour the custard mixture in. Add orange peels and repeat the same.

2. Orange marmalade

Peel a dozen oranges and squeeze them out to get their juice. Don’t throw away the skins or the white gooey part in between them, you’ll need them later. Julienne cut the orange peels, add lemon zest and lemon juice and mix it all with the orange juice and bring it to boil. Add sugar to the mixture and patiently simmer until it's thick enough. Spoon some hot marmalade onto an icy cold plate fresh from the freezer. If the mixture wrinkles slightly when you draw a spoon or finger across it, it has reached the set

All you need is two eggs, all-purpose flour, caster sugar, baking powder, salt to taste, and of course orange juice and orange zest. Add all of these in a bowl, except the egg whites and beat it until foamy. Add the mixture in the egg whites and gently mix. Your cake batter is ready to rise in the oven. Preheat the oven at 170C and sit with patience

With just four ingredients, this recipe will taste like heaven for dark chocolate and orange fans. To make these melt-in-your-mouth chocolate morsels, all you need is chocolate (preferably dark), heavy whipping cream and orange extract or orange oil.

To top off the goodness, there are many options to dip the finished truffles in for an extra spike of flavour. It can be powdered sugar, strawberry relish, chocolate chips and even sprinkles.
