Ali Gul Pir's 'Cousin Dhazan' narrates hilariously the awkward reality of cousin marriages

Ali Gul Pir, who doesn’t shy away from presenting the harsh and sometimes awkward realities of our society in his songs, has now released a track taking a jibe at the practice of cousin marriages.

The rapper-cum-impressionist had unveiled a "save the date" card earlier and several, including us, were fooled into believing he was actually getting married on Valentine's Day. The fact that he had only gotten engaged recently made his ‘wedding announcement’ all the more believable. But outsmarting everyone, Ali’s card served as a precursor for his upcoming song, Cousin Dhazan, that came out yesterday.

Speaking on the lines of how cousins are made to treat each other like siblings all their life until they’re suddenly arranged to be married, the song hilariously puts into perspective how awkward this arrangement becomes for the individuals involved. "A love song for cousins who grew up together and then ended up marrying each other. I bring you Cousin Dhazan!" Ali captioned the music video of his latest offering, adding a ‘thank you’ for saxophonist, Lenny Massey’s for his contribution.

The video features Ali with actor Rose Muhammad, who plays his cousin and wife. The two are seen honeymooning at the beach as Ali raps about how he and Rose went from being first cousins to soulmates. The saxophone sets a romantic mood with the tone of the song remaining sarcastic. Ali’s character narrates how he is a ‘khala ka beta’ who has been like a ‘bro’ to his now-wife but she still loves him. It even sees him justifying, in a rather cringey-seductive manner, how their match is made in heaven provided they were never actual siblings.

"I’ve always found it funny how you grow up with your cousins, call them bhai [brother] or aapi [sister] and then one day your parents decide that you will marry one of them. Now, all of sudden, it’s bhai to charpai! Love can be awkward. That’s my new song 'Cousin Dhazan' premiering at 3pm!" Ali had shared in his announcement prior to the song’s release.

The “save the date” card Ali had posted earlier flaunted caricatures of him and his supposed fiancé. The comments section of his post saw many congratulate him, while few even inquired if his fiancé was his maternal aunt's daughter – perhaps they were in on it.
