53,547 cases pending before Supreme Court
Over 53,547 are pending before the Supreme Court of Pakistan, it emerged on Friday, revealing an increase in the pendency of the cases.
According to the latest fortnightly report of the apex court, 495 cases were decided by the SC from January 16 to June 31, whereas 673 new cases were instituted during the same period in the principal seat in Islamabad, and the registries in Karachi, Peshawar, Lahore and Quetta.
Meanwhile, 278 of these new cases were filed in Islamabad, 248 in Lahore, 73 in Karachi, 61 in Peshawar and 13 in Quetta.
Out of 495 cases settled by the top court, 464 had been decided by the principal seat of the apex court in Islamabad, 31 from Karachi, whereas no case was heard in Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta.

Therefore, the number of pending cases in all registries increased by 147, bringing the total number to 53,547.
Out of all pending cases, 40,427 are civil cases, 28 suo motu notices and 133 are petitions related to basic human rights. Criminal cases and jail petitions in the top court have also exceeded 11,000.
