KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KW&SB) chief engineer to appear before the court at the next hearing on the petition regarding non-supply of drinking water in Clifton Block 2.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Syed Hassan Azhar Rizvi heard the petition.

The court was furious with the KW&SB deputy director.

"If water can be obtained through tankers, then why not from lines?" the court remarked.

Justice Rizvi said, all the water is going to the tankers. "The water board has joined the tanker mafia. One tanker owner becomes the owner of several tankers in just six months," Justice Rizvi remarked.

The KW&SB engineer said that multi-storied buildings have been constructed in the area.

"So will you not give water to them," the court remarked. Expressing anger, the court remarked, "If you are not giving water then why are you sending bills? Water Board has no water supply strategy. In reports, you tell long stories. It is said that there is no water, but no solution is given as to how the water will be distributed."

Justice Rizvi, while expressing anger, remarked that water was stolen from all the slums. "Water boards, tankers steal water by pumping. Why don't you apply engineering? Where did you get your degree from? Which engineering degree did you get? Let's get your degree checked," the court remarked.

The court directed the KW&SB Chief Engineer to appear at the next hearing.

Meanwhile, the Sindh High Court has directed the KW&SB to submit a comprehensive reply on the petition of the residents of Sachal Goth regarding the supply of sewage water through the water board lines in the area.

Javed Akhtar Rind, counsel for the petitioners, stated that the drinking water lines around Block B were in a state of disrepair. Sewage water is running in water board's drinking water lines. Residents of the area are forced to consume contaminated. Children of eight schools are drinking the same contaminated water.

Water has accumulated in Sachal Goth cemetery. Drinking and sewage water are flowing into the graves but the KW&SB is not taking any action. The court directed the KW&SB to submit a comprehensive reply within four weeks.
