Digitalisation and transformation of small industries should be part of the new small and medium enterprise (SME) policy of the government, remarked Pakistan-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) President Wang Zihai.
Speaking at a session virtually at the PCJCCI premises on Monday, he was of the view that all sorts of innovation could take place in domestic markets and small industries, which could help prop up exports and enhance foreign exchange earnings. “Small shopkeepers, such as hawkers, make up a huge chunk of small and medium enterprises and if we are able to give a push to this segment, we will have more egalitarian development,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, PCJCCI Senior Vice President Ehsan Choudhry stressed that trade policy should not only be aimed at promoting exports but should also promote all trade, both at home and abroad. He underlined the need to redesign Pakistan’s trade policy, create opportunities and provide an enabling environment so that domestic markets could flourish.
He pointed out that domestic markets and small industries of Pakistan primarily included retail and wholesale segments, restaurants and hotels, construction, transportation, storage and communication, financial, real estate and personal services.
