KARACHI:

A meteor hurtled through the night sky over Karachi and was visible to stargazers in the metropolis and other parts of Sindh on Saturday night.

Social media users reported seeing a fast-moving colourful object in the sky which shortly disappeared. According to details, the meteor was seen at around 7:15pm in the sky which was visible from many areas of the province including Karachi.

Astronomical groups confirmed the event as the rock could be seen burning up in the Earth's atmosphere, before crashing to the ground.

Weather analyst Jawad Memon said that such meteors do not pose any threat to the population.

A meteor is a space rock—or meteoroid—that enters Earth's atmosphere. As the space rock falls toward the ground, the resistance—or drag—of the air on the rock makes it extremely hot. They are commonly called "shooting stars".

According to NASA, the bright streak is not actually the rock, but rather the glowing hot air as the hot rock zips through the Earth's atmosphere. When Earth encounters many meteoroids at once, it is called a "meteor shower".
