KHYBER:

The protest sit-in staged by the locals of Khyber district in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa against the closure of stone crushing machines continued for the second consecutive day on Saturday.

Addressing the participants, PTI MNA Iqbal Afridi, who is leading the protest, said that he has been struggling for three years to resolve the fundamental issues of his constituency.

The ruling party lawmaker lamented that he had failed to resolve the issues of his voters under his own party’s rule in the province and at the Centre.

Afridi said he held a meeting with Peshawar Corps Commander to discuss the matter of ongoing protest against the closure of plants.

The commander has assured that he would convene a jirga by tomorrow [Sunday], which will devise standard operation procedures (SOPs) for the reopening of plants, he maintained.

“If the jirga is not formed by tomorrow, the scope of protest will be widened,” he warned.

Hundreds of citizens have been protesting on Pak-Afghan highway near Bara Bazaar in Khyber district since yesterday.

According to the protesters, 80 crushing plants were shut down in Besai Pahar in 2009 and have not been restored yet.

Hundreds of small and large vehicles have been stranded due to the closure of the highway.
