SC fines lawyer for coming unprepared to contest case

The Supreme Court has fined a lawyer Rs10,000 for coming unprepared to contest a case.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial heard a corruption case at TMA Larkana.

Four officers of TMA Larkana have been accused of corruption worth millions of rupees.

The counsel for the accused adopted the stance that his clients had deposited the corruption money in the accountability court.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah remarked that bail cannot be granted merely on account of depositing corruption money. He said after amendment in the NAB law the accountability court was hearing the bail cases.

Justice Bandial pointed out that the accused had been on interim bail for the last two years.

The accused counsel requested the court to extend the interim bail by six days, saying they would then approach the accountability court.

Justice Bandial replied that the top court could not supersede the high court and send the case to the trial court.

He said the decision of the high court could be suspended and then the matter can be sent to the apex court.

The accused lawyer sought time from the SC to prepare on the matter after which the top court fined him Rs10,000 for coming unprepared to contest the case and adjourned the hearing
