Pendency of cases at SC shows decline

Apex decided 1,116 cases from December 16 to December 31, while 835 new cases were registered

With the Covid pandemic on the wane in the federal capital, the number of pending cases in the Supreme Court also started declining significantly. According to the data released by the Supreme Court, the number of pending cases came down to 51,766 from more than 54,000 cases in November.

According to the data, the apex decided 1,116 cases from December 16 to December 31, while 835 new cases were registered in the same period.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed has formed five benches for hearing of cases during next week. Major cases fixed for hearing in the week include the disqualification case of former president Pervez Musharraf and the bail application of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Khursheed Shah.

The Bench number 1 would be led by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmad, and comprise Justice Mazhar Alam Mian Khel, Justice Mazahir Naqvi; while bench number 2 would be headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial and include Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Aminuddin Khan.

Bench 3 comprises Justice Faez Issa and Justice Yahya Afridi and Bench number 4 includes Justice Ijazul Ahsan, Justice Muneeb Akhtar and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel. Another bench, comprising Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar will hear the cases at the Karachi Registry.
