PM urges intl community, UN to act against Indian 'war crimes' in IIOJK

Premier, ministers' messages come on day of Kashmir's Right to Self Determination

ISLAMABAD:

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday has urged the international community, especially the UN, to take action against India’s "wars crimes and crimes against humanity" in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), as Kashmiris continue to reject the Indian occupation.

The premier's message came through his official Twitter handle on January 5, which is marked as the Right to Self-Determination Day for the Kashmiris to remind the UN to implement its own resolutions on the dispute passed on this day in 1949.

On January 5, 1949, the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan adopted a resolution that guaranteed the Kashmiris right to self-determination through an impartial plebiscite.

In his message, PM Imran maintained that Pakistan remained “steadfast in its commitment to the just Kashmiri struggle for self-determination”.

He highlighted how the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) commitment of a “UN-supervised plebiscite in Kashmir remains unfulfilled” as the Hindutva Modi government “brazenly violates UNSC resolutions”, international humanitarian laws and international conventions, including the 4th Geneva Convention.

He further added that India was committing “war crimes by seeking to alter status and demography of IIOJK”.

President Dr Arif Alvi on the occasion stated that “no amount of Indian attempts will succeed in misleading the international community and glossing over India’s state-terrorism being perpetuated with shameless impunity in IIOJK,”

Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari also took to the microblogging platform to emphasise the “shameful reflection” on the UN, particularly the UNSC, for being “unable to implement its own commitment despite the growing oppression by a fascist Occupation Indian govt in IIOJK”.

The minister maintained that the international community should not forget “what happened when it appeased Nazi Germany”.

“It must not allow the same to happen again by appeasing the fascist Modi regime in India with an agenda of genocide against the Kashmiris in IIOJK,” said Mazari.

‘UN must live up to its promise’

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the UN must live up to its promise of granting the right to self-determination to Kashmiris.

“Self-determination is one of the fundamental rights codified in all major human rights instruments as well as the United Nations Charter. The denial of this right and subjugation of Kashmiris in IIOJK is the negation of human dignity,” FM Qureshi said in his message on the occasion of Self-Determination Day.

The minister further said that India must be urged to allow the UN fact-finding mission to the IIOJK to investigate the reports of grave human rights violations there.

“Today marks the completion of 73 years since the United Nations committed that the Jammu and Kashmir Dispute would be decided through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite.

“Through its resolution of January 5, 1949, the United Nations Security Council affirmed its support to the realisation of the inalienable right to self-determination of Kashmiris,” he added.

He maintained that unfortunately this right has not yet been realised for Kashmiris because of continuing oppression by India in IIOJK.

In the last seven decades, three generations of Kashmiris have rendered tremendous sacrifices for their just struggle, yet their human dignity is being violated on daily basis in IIOJK, he stated.
