Indian Congress President Sonia Gandhi had to face an awkward situation on her party’s 137th foundation day as the party’s flag fell from the pole as she tried to hoist it during the event held in New Delhi on Tuesday, Indian media reported.

A video doing rounds on social media showed as soon as Gandhi pulled the rope and looked up, the flag fell into her hands.

Later, Gandhi along with other party leaders held the flag in their hands and displayed it briefly.

A Congress worker later climbed up the flagpole to string the party tricolour.

Founded in 1885, as the first modern nationalist and secular movement in South Asia, Congress marks its foundation day on Tuesday. Over the past 74 years, since India became independent, the party has ruled the country for 54 years, with its six leaders becoming prime ministers.

The secular party has received electoral setbacks since it was ousted out of power in 2014, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP. Its president, Rahul Gandhi resigned in July 2019, owning the responsibility of second defeat at 2019 polls. Since then, the party is headed by his mother Sonia Gandhi.
