RAWALPINDI:

Federal Parliamentary Secretary Shaikh Rashid Shafiq on Wednesday claimed that the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved Rawalpindi Ring Road and Leh Expressway projects, which will prove to be a game-changer for Rawalpindi’s development.

Shafiq confirmed to The Express Tribune that the ECNIC has given the final approval for the construction of the two mega projects. He said tenders for both the projects will be issued in the next 10 days while the foundation stone will be laid in the last week of January.

He said that both the mega projects will be completed within two years. “Work on both projects will be started simultaneously at two or three locations. The establishment of a water treatment plant along the Leh Expressway has also been included in the project,” he said.

The 17-kilometre-long Leh Expressway will be built at a cost of Rs130 billion and the Rawalpindi Ring Road at a cost of Rs100 billion. The Leh Expressway route will be from Rialto Chowk, Murree Road to the IJP Road.

The Leh Expressway will have interchanges and bridges, while commercial hubs will be built on both sides of Leh Expressway and Ring Road. Buildings up to 8-storey will be allowed on both sides of the project along with green belts.
