HYDERABAD:

The initial postmortem report of the medical student, who was found dead in her hostel room in Larkana on Wednesday, has established asphyxiation due to hanging as the cause of her death.

The Chandka Medical College Hospital issued the report on the death of Dr Nosheen Kazmi, a fourth year student of Chandka Medical College of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University, on Thursday.

"Asphyxia caused by hanging with a rope (ligature material) ante-mortem in nature and sufficient to cause the death," reads the woman medical officer's report. But the conclusive report will be issued after analysis of the student's viscera which were taken for the chemical and histopathology examination.

The fatal injury mark was measured 26 centimetres by one centimetre from right to left side of the upper neck above thyroid.

The report did not mention any other injury over the deceased person's body. The DIG Larkana Range Mazhar Nawaz Shaikh accompanied by SSP Imran Qureshi visited the hostel room in which the body was found, assessed the security and met the varsity's vice chancellor Prof Dr Anila Attaur Rehman on Thursday.

Talking to the media later the DIG told that a police team led by the SSP has started an investigation while the forensic report is awaited. He said the police are recording statements of the fellow students, teachers and the security staff.

"The suicide note [allegedly written by Kazmi] has also been sent to the forensic lab. We will soon come to know if it was a suicide or a murder." The DIG apprised that during his meeting with the VC, they discussed improving the security arrangements including installation of the CCTV cameras and deployment of guards.

The student's body was shifted to her hometown in Dadu district on Wednesday night and she was laid to rest after her Namaz-e-Janaza at Muhammad Murad graveyard on Thursday.

The student's father Syed Hidayatullah Kazmi, Deputy Director of Sindh Social Welfare Department, said while talking to the media that it is difficult for him to accept that his daughter took her own life.

"She spent up to 18 hours studying and she used to offer Namaz five times a day," he said with tears rolling down his cheeks. According to him, Kazmi was not under any mental stress as far as he and his family knew. He demanded a judicial probe of the incident.
