Britney calls out Christina for 'refusing to speak up' when questioned about conservatorship
Pop superstar Britney Spears, who recently celebrated the end of an abusive conservatorship, called out fellow 90s singer Christina Aguilera for not responding to a question related to Spears’ ordeal while on the red carpet for an awards show.
Spears took to her Instagram stories on Friday posting a video of Aguilera on the Latin Grammy Awards red carpet, in which the latter is asked by a reporter whether she has been in touch with Spears since the termination of the conservatorship. Aguilera’s publicist quickly interjects and pulls her away, saying, “No, we’re not doing that tonight. I’m sorry,” following which the singer frowns and says, “But I’m happy for her,” while walking away.
Spears wrote alongside the video, “I love and adore everyone who supported me… but refusing to speak when you know the truth, is equivalent to a lie! 13 years being in a corrupt abusive system yet why is it such a hard topic for people to talk about? I’m the one who went through it! All the supporters who spoke up and supported me, thank you… yes, I do matter!”
According to Variety, Aguilera’s publicist did not respond to a request for comment.
Spears and Aguilera rose to prominence in the 90s, having their start in The Mickey Mouse Club, co-starring in the show from 1993-1994. Aguiera previously posted an open letter to Instagram to show her support for Spears at the height of her legal battle with her father Jamie Spears. "To be silenced, ignored, bullied or denied support by those “close” to you is the most depleting, devastating and demeaning thing imaginable," she wrote.
In response to support shown by Lady Gaga on a separate red carpet, in which the House of Gucci actor responded at length when asked about Spears’ situation and freedom, the Toxic singer wrote on Instagram, “Thank you, Lady Gaga, for genuinely taking your time to say something so kind,” adding, “You made me cry! I love you!” In the interview referenced by the singer, Gaga said, “I think that [Britney Spears] will forever be an inspiration to women.”
Following Spears’ post, Gaga took to Instagram saying, “Love you, Britney Spears. Live your best life. I prayed for the legal system to treat you like a person. You’ve now changed the course for women in this industry forever. You stood up for yourself and were so brave. Thank you.”
