KMC to generate electricity from garbage: Wahab
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is close to materializing its plan to generate electricity from garbage resolving the issue of garbage disposal and power shortage, said Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab on Monday.
“Union councils of the Central district will get door-to-door garbage collection facility,” he said at the launch of 250 garbage collecting trikes.
Biggest problem of the city for many years was garbage collection, however, ever since the Sindh government took control of the local bodies, the garbage situation has improved in a few months, Wahab claimed.
“We will soon generate electricity from garbage and give gifts to the people of Karachi. Sindh is the only province of Pakistan whose waste management policy is being appreciated,” the administrator said addressing a function held at China Ground, Kashmir Road, East district.
Sindh Solid Waste Management Board MD Zubair Channa and other officers were also present on the occasion.
Wahab said 250 vehicles will collect garbage from house to house in all Union Councils of East district. The administrator said that sanitation situation in the city will improve with, addition of 200 garbage trucks being provided to East district.
He said that more machinery and labour will also be provided. He said that Solid Waste Management Board was functioning in five districts of Karachi while work will also start soon in Districts Central and Korangi.

He asked the citizens to cooperate with the staff of Solid Waste Management Board so that the city could be cleaned up as soon as possible.
Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that now local bodies in Karachi seemed to be working in full swing. He said that they are moving towards improvement under the same powers and resources which have not been utilised in the past Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) MD Zubair Channa said that house-to-house collection of garbage is being started in District East.
He said that more than two dozen small vehicles will be used for house-to-house collection of garbage. He said that they need the help of law enforcement agencies to get rid of garbage mafia.
All permits of these contractors have been canceled by the Sindh government, however, they continue to handle garbage. Channa said more than 300 housing societies in East district were asked to cooperate with SSWMB staff for the cleanliness of the respective areas.
Liyari Expressway opened for heavy traffic The Karachi Administrator, Sindh government spokesman and Advisor to CM on law, Barrister Murtaza Wahab said on Monday that the flow of heavy traffic on Lyari Expressway is being monitored.
“Trucks and container trailers will pass through the Lyari Expressway on trial basis. It is expected that plying of heavy traffic on Lyari Expressway will reduce traffic congestion in the city,” the administrator said during his visit to the Lyari Expressway. Metropolitan Commissioner, Afzal Zaidi, DIG motorways, officials of National Highway Authority and others were also present on the occasion.
The administrator reviewed the arrangements made to divert the heavy traffic to Lyari Expressway and gave instructions to the officers in this regard. He said that traffic jam is a major problem of the city which wastes time and fuel of citizens. Efforts are being made to find permanent solution to all such issues.
