JI demand for LG polls in Sindh echoes in ECP

Also asks ECP to increase union councils in Karachi in accordance to the population of the city

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Chief Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman's demand for local bodies elections echoed in the Election Commission of Pakistan (CEP) as the JI leader appeared before the commission in connection with the hearing of the case.

The ECP had invited the JI leader for hearing after Engr Naeem had written a letter to the chief election commissioner, highlighting the legal and constitutional aspects of the delay in local bodies' polls.

Following the hearing, the JI leader held a media talk. He said he demanded of the ECP to set a deadline for announcement of the local bodies polls as well as delimitations. The JI leader said that he also demanded of the ECP to increase union councils in Karachi in accordance to the population of the city.

The JI leader also demanded of the ECP to ensure legislation within 15 days for an empowered local government in the city. The JI leader said that as per the law and the constitution, local bodies polls in Sindh should have been conducted in August 2019. The local governments are called nurseries of the democracy, he said, adding that the journey of progress and development of the country could not be completed without local bodies.
