Dairy cartel to collect Rs230 million daily through the sale of milk at new rate

Following the announcement made by dairy farmers and wholesalers have unilaterally increased the retail price of lose milk by Rs10 from Rs130 to Rs140 per litre, effective from November 8.

The dairy farmers have price also increased the price of yoghurt by Rs20 from Rs200 to Rs220 per kilogramme. Retailers in the city have displayed the new rates of milk and yoghurt at their shops without any official notification from the district administration.

With this increase, the difference between the official and unofficial price of milk has increased to Rs46. The district administration had fixed the milk rates at Rs94 in 2018 and has yet to notify new rates, whereas the dairy dealers have increased the prices at their own whims during the past three years.

The cartel, comprising dairy farmers and wholesalers, will collect Rs230 million daily from the citizens of Karachi by selling milk at Rs140 per litre.

The dairy farmers moved the court and also pressurised the Karachi commissioner for an increase in milk prices following which the commissioner formed a committee headed by the Malir deputy commissioner after a meeting with the consumer representatives on October 25 and dairy farmers’ associations on November 4 to estimate the cost of milk. However, the dairy farmers and wholesalers raised milk prices on their own without waiting for the committee’s estimate.
