Jail officials thwart ‘suicide’ by inmates

Three inmates attempted suicide with blades within their barracks to put pressure on the jail administration.
Inmates Gulfam, Awais and Aun, along with their acquaintances, had begun a fight with other inmates and vitiated the atmosphere of the prison.
They also harassed other inmates of the prison.
In order to keep the discipline of the jail, the prison administration transferred the rowdy inmates to cell number 3.
There the inmates injured themselves with blades in an apparent attempt to commit suicide or at least to fool the police into believing in their being serious about killing themselves.
The jail administration, however, very tactfully managed to prevent the inmates from killing themselves and to bring the situation into normalcy.

However, they registered a case against five accused, including the three rowdy detainees, and started investigation.
According to a report submitted to the Lahore High Court (LHC) earlier this year on behalf of the inspector general of prisons in response to a petition seeking directions to treat the prisoners in accordance with the Jail Manual, overcrowding of prisoners in the jails of Punjab has dropped to 37 per cent from 146% during the past decade.
The petitioner had also called for shifting patients suffering from mental disorders to hospitals and drug addicts to rehabilitation centres.
