While the counsel for the banned Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) sought adjournment of the hearing of a plea on Wednesday in view of progress taking place for the release of workers and the leader of the party, the lawyers representing the government did not give any indication about their course of action.
Security officials were deployed in front of the courtroom of Lahore High Court Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti to avoid any untoward incident.
There had been speculations that the government might withdraw its case from the LHC after an agreement with the banned party whose counsel had knocked the doors of the court against the detention of its leader Saad Rizvi.
As the day's proceedings commenced, the party's lawyer Mian Pervaz Hussain told the court that the government and the TLP had reached an agreement. He requested the court to adjourn the case till the situation regarding the agreement became clear.
Chief Justice Bhatti remarked that the court was not hearing the matter, but the issue of maintainability of the counsel's petition.
The petitioner's counsel said an understanding had developed and requested the court to adjourn the case.
The chief justice remarked that the understanding had nothing do with the case. He remarked that the petitioner had challenged a notification that had expired.
The chief justice remarked that if the counsel felt they could not achieve anything then they would have to file a fresh petition.
