Indian starlet Sara Ali Khan’s turbulent Bollywood journey has made headlines several times. Whether it is her uninformed opinions about colourism or her thoughts on the Black Lives Matter movement, the actor has managed to irk many with her troublesome stances.

Her films, on the other hand, haven’t done much for her questionable career as well. The starlet, who made her Bollywood debut with late actor Sushant Singh Rajput in the 2018 film Kedarnath, hasn’t impressed the audience or critics. However, her exuberant personality and larger-than-life persona have always been lauded by her fans.

Sara graced the cover of Harper Bazaar India this month and the actor went on to spill the beans on her professional and personal life.

Speaking about how she was as a kid, the Coolie No 1 actor commented, “The same at the core of who I am. I see pictures of myself from when I was a little girl and ‘drama queen’ is the term that comes to mind. When I was younger, I would be in a complete get-up, wearing my mom’s make-up and serving tea with my dollhouse set... And my father would make short videos of me enacting a Moov or a Nirma ad.” Sara added that her parents often told her she was extremely “grounded in my traditions and roots, be that in my clothing or language... And Hindi is my operative language when it comes to high emotions.”

The actor, on several occasions, has been asked about how she and her brother, Ibrahim, coped with their parents’ divorce. “I’ve always had the tendency to mature a bit faster than others my age. And even at the age of 9, I think I had the maturity to see that these two people living together in our home were not happy,” she said, adding, “And suddenly, they were much happier living in two new homes. For instance, my mom, who I don’t think had laughed in 10 years, was suddenly happy, beautiful, and excited, like she deserves to be.”

On the prospect of whether she was unhappy about her parents splitting, Sara responded, “Why would I be unhappy if I have two happy parents in two happy homes? So no, I don’t think that was difficult at all… They’re both infinitely happier and in a much more positive space today. I see my mom laughing and joking and being silly, which is something I have missed for so many years. It’s a joyful relief to see her like this again.”

When asked what brings Sara joy, she replied, “Mommy, number one.” She further added, “Being in front of the camera. Drinking a cup of hot coffee early in the morning. Watching the sky at daybreak...you know, when it’s dark, and then it becomes really light-blue, and at the moment right before sunrise is a little flicker of red. Also, a great workout or long walk. Yeah, that’s life.”

When she was queried about what makes her sad, the Love Aaj Kal actor shared, “I don’t feel sad very often. But every time I feel any semblance of sadness, stress, anxiety, or irritation, I share it with my mom. But I feel so guilty for doing that because 10 minutes later, I’ll be chilling in my room because I’ve offloaded, and half an hour later, she’ll come to me saying, ‘I’ve been worried about you, how are you doing now?’ I’ve probably been watching an episode of Game of Thrones, and I’ll end up suggesting that she does the same.” She went on, “Another thing I’m anxious, rather, cognisant of is the fact that as a leading Indian heroine, time is of great value. So, losing two years to a pandemic has made me anxious.”

As a public figure, there are certain misconceptions drawn by the public. Sara, when inquired about a common misconception about her, remarked many deem her to be arrogant. “I’ve been told by people that I can come across as arrogant, which I’m not. You have to know me to get me... I have a dry sense of humour, like my father’s. And like him, I also take life with a pinch—no, a ‘punch’—of salt,” she quipped. She continued, “I can come across as callous to overly-sensitive people because I don’t take things too seriously. Life is too short! People can assume that I’m being flippant or callous, whereas that’s not the case. I’m realistic and understand that you need to relax and not take yourself too seriously. I’m outspoken and can be loud. But in my head, there are images of myself that I’d like to live up to. I might come across as arrogant, but you have to meet me more than once to know that’s not true.”

Speaking of her earliest memories of watching films, Sara shared she thought Saif was someone who used bad language and her mum ran a porn business. “All I remember is watching Omkara [2006] and Kalyug [2005] and being really disturbed that my parents were such negative people!” she laughed, adding, “I was very young and I used to think that my father uses bad language and that my mom runs a porn site...it was not fun! And because they were both nominated for ‘best actor in a negative role’ in the same year, I was, like, ‘What is this!?’”

Sara will next be seen in a Netflix original film, Atangi Re, which also stars Dhanush and Akshay Kumar.
