Teaser for Sajal, Bilal's 'Khel Khel Mein' is giving serious 'Rang De Basanti' vibes
The first teaser of Sajal Aly and Bilal Abbas Khan starrer Khel Khel Mein released on Saturday and it is giving immense Rang De Basanti vibes. The upcoming period film, slated to release on November 19, is the first Pakistani production to screen in a cinema post pandemic. “50 years of mistrust, memories and myths,” reads its synopsis.
The teaser for Khel Khel Mein, which is inspired by true events, starts off with the narration, “Hum men se kisi ne bhi ye nahi socha tha ke aik chingari puray jangal ko jaladegi, humen laga tha ke ye aik waqti azmaaish hai (None of us could’ve even imagined that a single spark will set fire to an entire forest, we thought that this was only a temporary test).”
Starting from the flashbacks of war, the clip goes onto show glimpses of present day youngsters enrolled in a school play that is set to look back at the events of the Indo-Pak War of 1971. It closes with Sajal’s character asking her presumable class mates, “Kiun ham aik jhootay ilzaam ka bojh apne seenay per uthae phir rahe hain? Ya hum bhi ussi chaal ka hissa bangae jo dushman ne chali thi? (Why are we carrying the burden of a false accusation? Or did we also become pawns in a game initiated by our enemies?)”
While revealing the first look of the film back in July, Khan had tweeted, “If history was taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.”
Now, it appears the film might certainly take us down an unforgettable road of friendship and betrayal, life and death, all while learning from the best of the best. The set of the film and art direction is quite reminiscent of Aamir Khan’s Rang De Basanti. The formula of revisiting history through documentation and theatrical recreation was also used by the Bollywood super hit, accompanied by a strong female lead that assembles and directs a bunch of otherwise, oblivious youngsters.
According to the filmmakers, Khel Khel Mein will lift the curtain on the creative genius of youngsters that holds the power to spark change in the mindset of an entire society. Its star-studded cast also includes Marina Khan, Javed Sheikh, Samina Ahmed and Manzar Sehbai. The Nabeel Qureshi directorial will release under the banner of Filmwala Pictures.
