Man, daughter drown at Sandspit beach, two kids rescued

Family of five had gone on a picnic to Hawke’s Bay when a huge wave swept them away

A man and his daughter drowned in the sea at Sandspit beach, Hawke's Bay while his two children were rescued. The deceased was working as a photographer in a news agency.

Sources said the father and daughter had gone missing on Tuesday while swimming in the sea at Sandspit Beach within the limits of Mauripur police. Their bodies were recovered by rescue teams after an hour-long struggle and shifted to Civil Hospital. The man was identified as Sohail Ahmed, 45, and the girl was identified as Maryam Sohail, 15.

The deceased father and daughter were the residents of an area near Nagan Chowrangi. Khurshid, a relative of the deceased, told The Express Tribune that Sohail along with his five children and wife had gone on a picnic at Sandspit, Hawke's Bay. Sohail and his three children, 15-year-old Maryam, 12-year-old Ali and seven-year-old Hiba, were bathing in the sea when suddenly a big wave swept them away.

Sohail's wife and two daughters on the shore cried for help and then a rescue teams rushed to the spot and rescued two children Ali and Hiba. However, Sohail and his eldest daughter Maryam went missing and after an hour-long struggle, the rescue teams recovered their bodies.

The deceased were laid to rest in Muhammad Shah graveyard.
