Rawalpindi mayor demands uplift funds

Mohammad Naseem Khan says will approach court if funds not released

RAWALPINDI:

Rawalpindi Mayor Sardar Mohammad Naseem Khan said that suspension of local bodies for the past two years has virtually brought development work in the city to a halt.

He demanded the resumption of development work in the city by restoring funds of the Rawalpindi Metropolitan Municipal Corporation (RMMC). Khan said that if funds were not provided to the corporation, they would approach the high court.

The Rawalpindi mayor said that a meeting of the metropolitan corporation would be called soon in which a resolution against inflation, devaluation of rupee, and petrol hike would be passed.

He said that the Supreme Court has handed down a democratic verdict by restoring local bodies. Answering a question on bureaucratic hurdles, he said: “We have no fight with the bureaucracy and will carry out our duty in accordance with the constitution, law and democratic tradition.”

The Rawalpindi mayor said that they have completed consultation with government representatives and that a meeting of the metropolitan corporation would be convened soon.

The Rawalpindi mayor will assume charge of the office on Thursday (today) after the local bodies were revived.
