Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that "Muslims should have been the leading environmentalists" and carers for "future generations".

"Almost 1500 years ago our Prophet PBUH emphasised that our actions on this earth must consider their impact on our future generations. So far sighted," the premier wrote on his official Twitter handle Wednesday evening.

PM Imran also said that Hazrat Ali (AS) also emphasised the same. "We Muslims should have been the leading environmentalists caring for our future generations."

The prime minister has highlighted the grave issue of climate change on multiple forums, repeatedly saying that it is one of the top priorities of his government.

Last month, while addressing an informal closed meeting of 25 heads of state and government on climate change convened jointly by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, the premier called on the developed nations to fulfil their commitments made under the Paris Agreement and suggested a debt-for-nature swap initiative to create fiscal space for the developing countries for enhanced climate actions.

The prime minister also stressed that the developed countries must take lead in raising their climate ambitions, both for emissions reduction and increased financial flows to the developing countries.

He expressed concern over unrealised climate finance pledges by the developed countries. He suggested that initiatives such as debt-for-nature swap would create fiscal space for the developing countries for enhanced climate actions.

On the occasion, PM Imran also highlighted Pakistan’s extreme vulnerability to climate change. He informed the world leaders that addressing the impact of climate change is a major priority of his government.
