Woman, couple ‘killed over honour’ in Chak Jhumra

Victims were reportedly murdered by relatives for free-will marriage

Three persons including two women were allegedly killed for ‘honour’ in separate incidents in the city on Sunday.

Police registered cases against the suspected killers as well as their accomplices and arrested one suspect while teams were formed to conduct raids to nab two of the suspects.

According to the police report, a man allegedly killed his sister in the name of honour, while in the other incident, a man allegedly killed his daughter and son-in-law by giving them poisonous substance.

Police said Hamid, son of Mahmood Ahmed and a resident of Gulshan-e-Hayat ABC Road, who was associated with cloth business, recently contracted marriage with Malaika, the 22-year-old daughter of Mohammad Saleem and a resident of Shadab Colony Street No 2, a year ago.

Hamid was going to the market to buy clothes material with Rs1.5 million cash from his father Mahmood.

Meanwhile, the suspect Saleem along with his brother Wasim gave poisonous drugs to his son-in-law and daughter.

Both victims were shifted to Civil Hospital Faisalabad in critical condition. Hamid died at the hospital and his wife Malaika died a few hours later.

Jhang Bazaar police reached the spot and took the bodies of the two victims into custody. After the postmortem, police registered a case under the provisions of double murder against the father and uncle of the woman on the statement of Mahmood and started raids to nab them.

Police added the couple got married a year ago, but Malaika's father and uncle did not agree with the decision.

The victim's father and uncle killed the couple by poisoning them. During police interrogation, Saleem and Wasim claimed that the couple had committed suicide by swallowing poisonous substances due to a domestic dispute. Police were investigating the matter.

In another incident, 28-year-old Zeba, who got married six months ago in Chak No 25JB, Satoiwala village, was allegedly stabbed to death by her brother Sarfraz, a resident of Qazianwala area of Chiniot, while working in a kiln.

During the murder incident, the victim’s husband Ijaz Ahmed screamed which caught the attention of the villagers working in the surrounding fields. The locals rushed to the spot, caught the suspect and tied him up with chains and informed the police.

Police took the body of the victim into custody. Police also registered a case against the suspected killer on the statement of the victim's husband under the provisions of murder. The suspect was sent behind bars

In this regard, Chak Jhumra SHO Inspector Rana Umar Draz said that the victim Zeba had got married to Ijaz six months ago on which the suspect was deranged.

The victim's brother stabbed his sister to death in the wee hours of the day while she was working at the kiln. Incidents of honour killing were not uncommon in the province.

On October 9, a man shot dead his wife for ‘honour’ in Mela police limits. Police said Ashraf Ranjha, a resident of Kot Imrana village, accused his wife Talat Bibi of having a relationship with his friend Sajid Wattoo. Reportedly, the suspect allegedly shot his wife dead and fled. Police registered a case against the accused.

On February 24, a woman was murdered by her father in Lahore’s Shalimar area over suspicion of being in a relationship with a man.
